Use advanced robotics technology to design a build a firefighting robot.

For more than 25 years Trinity College in Hartford, CT has hosted annually the International Fire Fighting Home Robot Competition, which advances robotic technology and knowledge by using robots as an educational tool. Unique among competitions, only autonomous robots are included. In other word, no remote controls are allowed. First, second and third prizes are awarded to teams in various divisions whose robots successfully navigate a maze to extinguish a candle. Winners are determined based on best combined score completing various levels of difficulty. There are several other related competitions as well.

How do I expand this narrative arc? If robotics is part of your narrative arc you might consider one of the many national robotics competitions, each of which involves different rules, parameters and prizes. For example:

There are also some interesting marine-based robotics programs where individuals and teams compete to build remotely operated vehicles to explore underwater environments.

HOT TIP: One of the best things about robotics competitions is that they’re actually fun. They’re also all about designing machines to perform in tasks. This one is particularly useful. Did you come up with something that might actually work in the real world? Take it to the next level when you pitch it to your local community leaders or fire station! This is a great way to create a connection between your strengths and interests and your community. Talk about making an impact!
