Genes in Space

Are you interested in science and space and fascinated by stories about the effects of space travel on the human body? Take that interest down to the micro level, and then up into space when you design a DNA experiment and make a pitch for it to be conducted on the International Space Stations. WOW.

“Genes in space invites U.S.-based students in grades 7-12 to design a DNA experiment that addresses challenges in space travel and deep space exploration. From bacterial cell growth to the human immune system, everything works a little differently in space. Choose a topic that interests you and explain why you think it's important for space exploration. You may have a chance to test your hypothesis when your proposed experiment is conducted on the International Space Station.”

How do I expand this narrative arc? If science and space are in your narrative arc think about supplementing this project with another research science (or space)-based opportunity. For example:

HOT TIP: It’s pretty rare that teens have the opportunity to work directly with professional scientists. If you are fortunate enough to participate in Genes in Space you should try to keep in touch with, and even expand, your connections to the team. The easiest way to find interesting opportunities is through people you already know. Show that you are interested and engaged and a hard worker, and chances are that they’ll be delighted to help you along the way.
