HK Maker Lab
The Hk Maker Lab is an intensive six-week summer program to learn the foundations of design. Focusing on addressing a health problem, participants will design, prototype and test a biomedical device and develop an associated business plan. The program will culminate in a presentation to leading executives from the biomedical community. The Hk Maker Lab projects might then be incubated using the state-of-the-art facilities at Harlem Biospace.
We anticipate this program will attract extremely motivated students, who will gain incredible “Maker” skills after this intense curriculum and who will in turn become student leaders of such programs in their college work. 28 students will participate in the Hk Maker Lab, which will be hosted at Columbia University.

How do I expand this narrative arc? Your choices may vary depending upon whether your interest lies in design, engineering or medicine. Consider the following as a few of the many interesting options available to you:
Check out one of the many prestigious (and often paid) summer internships at top medical and research institutions across American. For example: Stanford Medical Research Internship, Dana-Farber Cancer Research, Sloane Kettering Summer
Use mathematical modeling to show how a new technology or industry might change the future in the Modeling The Future Challenge
Use critical thinking and problem solving to design for positive global future outcomes in the Future Problem Solving Competition.
The Samsung Solve For Tomorrow competition is designed to boost interest and proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), and challenges public school teachers and students in grades 6-12 to show how STEM can be applied to help improve their communities.
HOT TIP: This program is available only to kids at NYC high schools. Keep in mind that if you live in or near a large urban area or university town there is a very good chance that a similar program is being run near you.
