WWII Quiz Bowl
Since 2004, The National WWII Museum has hosted an annual WWII-themed Quiz Bowl for high school students each spring. Quiz Bowl is an in-depth competition that challenges students with WWII knowledge and team-building. The preliminary round is on a Saturday afternoon, where teams from across the region compete by answering questions and completing teamwork challenges. The two top teams then compete in a live televised championship match.
The preliminary round is not a buzzer-type quiz. All teams answer the same questions at the same time on paper and are scored by a panel of Museum educators. Preliminary quiz consists of six themed rounds with 10 questions each. Each round ends with a short teamwork exercise.
The top two teams at the end of the preliminary round advance to the championship round conducted live on Cox’s regional television stations. The championship round is a standard buzzer-type competition. The championship quiz consists of three toss-up rounds and one lightning round.
How do I get started? Check the museum website for information on the upcoming Quiz Bowl for next year.
How do I expand this narrative arc? If History is in your narrative arc, consider building on this interest with one of the following:
Enter the National World War II Museum’s Essay Contest;
See our post on getting any historical research you may have done published in The Concord Review.
Get involved with more Civil War research through the Library of Congress website.
If your school offers the ability to do an independent study or writing projects, consider doing a larger research project that expands on the themes you explored in your WWII essay contest. Colleges love “pointy” students, and expansion on a theme will demonstrate your ability to go deep!
HOT TIP: This is a great program to kick off or complement a general interest in history or historial research. Make sure to build on this project with some larger and more time-intensive commitments in these interest areas.
