RoboFest

RoboFest is a large, well-run autonomous robotics competition for students in grades 4-12. It’s a great way to get started in the world of robotics competitions, or to take your robotics to the next level.

“Robofest is an international festival of competitions and events with autonomous robots that encourages students to have fun while learning principles of STEM and Computer Science. In RoboFest, students design, construct, and program the robots. Any robotics kits are allowed in the construction of robots, and robots can be programmed with any programming language. In the various competitions, teams of students in grades 4-12 build robots that participate in games, exhibitions, battles, and other events in local, regional, and world competitions. Student teams include up to five team members each.”

How do I expand this narrative arc? If robotics is part of your narrative arc you might consider one of the many national robotics competitions, each of which involves different rules, parameters and prizes. For example:

There are also some interesting marine-based robotics programs where individuals and teams compete to build remotely operated vehicles to explore underwater environments.

HOT TIP: Robotics competitions that are led by a teacher or coach are a great way for you to develop a mentoring relationship with an adult who can comment on your academic and personal strengths. Often teachers don’t have insight into things like how a student adapts to challenges and works with a team. Learn as much as you can from your teacher/coach and remember that this is a great “vehicle” for developing a solid college or job recommendation.
