Eureka Program

It is becoming increasingly common for high school students to do serious research in the sciences and social sciences (and also to publish their scholarly work). There are a number of reputable research programs run independently of high school that link motivated teens with graduate students and, occasionally, professors to advance their research projects and interests. This is a great way for a strong student to show evidence of deep interest and academic curiosity. Be selective in choosing a program. Like most extracurriculars, students get out of it what they put into it.

“Established in 2017, Eureka is an online research program designed for the highest-performing high school applicants worldwide. Through Eureka, high school students conduct college-level research with personalized mentorship from university faculty. With 40+ workshops offered per summer, Eureka allows students to address their research interests, build relationships with professors from top colleges, participate in rigorous research training, and strengthen academic writing skills.”

HOT TIP: Done properly, serious academic research (evidenced by a scholarly paper or other project) can be a major asset in the college admissions process. It’s also potentially a way to network within a strong area of interest, and to explore different avenues and opportunities for study.
