Ocean Coral Challenge
Students Help Turn the Tide on Coral Reef Decline! The Ocean Challenge offers students a unique opportunity to help restore marine health, protect essential coral reefs and support coastal communities. The Nature Conservancy, Bezos Family Foundation and partners have joined in an exciting new partnership to launch an Ocean Challenge through Students Rebuild, a Bezos Family Foundation program that mobilizes the younger generation to take action on some of the world’s most critical issues.
How do I get started? Go to the Ocean Coral Challenge website and get started.
How much time will this take? This is a medium time commitment.
How do I expand this narrative arc? If environmental research and ocean health is your narrative arc, consider building on this interest with one of the following:
Participate in a quick citizen science project that revolves around the environment or sustainability like The Big Microplastic Survey
Physically build and deploy satellite-tracked Student Drifters that track ocean currents and validate ocean models.
Apply for a grant from the Captain Planet Foundation for your own ocean related project.
You could also pivot to a community beach clean and organize a clean up of an area of beach near you.
HOT TIP: This is a great project for someone who has their PADI certification or is an avid snorkeler. Ideally you should complement this project with all of the above suggestions, but if time is tight, then focus on the citizen science projects and the Ocean Coral Challenge. If you have more time, the Captain Planet grants or the Student Drifters are incredible projects to be able to talk about.
