Sports Management
“The New York Times NYC Summer Academy gives intellectually curious high school students the opportunity to live and learn in New York City while studying topics in journalism, media, technology, arts, culture, sports, fashion, business, science and more. Each two-week course draws on the expertise and access of The New York Times and encourages students to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the real world.”
At The New York Times NYC Summer Academy you can learn the business of sports management firsthand, including from former players, coaches and agents.
How do I expand this narrative arc? If your narrative arc includes sports, and you want to show that you’re more than just a great athlete or super fan, think about expanding and deepening both with one of these opportunities:
Spend part of your summer attending the Wharton School’s Sports Management program
Create public art on a local basketball court with Project Backboard
Help your school establish a better concussion protocol with Heads Up
Start a fundraiser for a sports team in a nearby low income community with Support Youth Sports
If you’re great at math and love sports, consider attending Wharton’s Moneyball Summer Academy
HOT TIP: This is an interesting summer choice for a student who is seriously involved in sports and has an interest in business. Note that it may not be terribly competitive to gain admission, in which case it will be as valuable as the experiences gained (and, more important, what the student does to expand on them).
