Sotheby’s Summer Institute for pre-college students invites high schoolers who are curious and passionate about art to immerse themselves in one of the most vibrant art capitals in the world: New York City. Every summer, students can explore different facets of New York’s art scene from the business of art to the contemporary art world in two-week courses taught by leading scholars and professionals in the field. Each course draws on the expertise and unrivaled access of Sotheby's Institute and takes students behind the scenes of world class museums, galleries, auction houses, artists’ studios, and more.

How do I get started? Go to the Sothebys Summer Institute website and apply.

How do I expand this narrative arc? If art history or the art business are in your narrative arc, consider building on this interest with one of the following:

  • Take an advanced course in Art History at school.

  • Get permission from your High School to create an art display on ceiling tiles to show off the amazing art created by the studio art students. Alternatively, you could use the medium to highlight books, women’s rights, civil rights, climate change or anything you feel strongly about.

  • Be part of the Anno-Tate project to transcribe the sketchbooks of famous artists.

  • Apply for the rigorous and interdisciplinary Stanford Summer Arts program.

  • Project Backboard - in which you turn a neighborhood basketball court into a public work of art.

HOT TIP: Completing an Anno-Tate project or attending a summer program is a great start, but the greatest impact will be if you complement them with leading your own project such as the Ceiling Art Display or Project Backboard.
