Second City Improv Camp

Many of America’s most famous comedians got their start at Second City, one of the world’s most famous improvisational comedy programs. Based in Chicago, Second City now also has outposts in L.A. and Toronto. Improv is a fun and fast comedic outlet for creative teens but also also become part of the training in corporate environments. Explore Second City’s one and two-week camps, or check out year-long programs in writing, storytelling, public speaking and even music. You’re sure to get a lot of questions about this experience, and it’s likely to be a rewarding (and hilarious) choice!

The Second City’s signature Comedy Camps for youth & teens are the perfect space for budding comedians or young people looking to spend the summer laughing and creating.

Campers explore the fundamentals of improv as taught and performed at The Second City and develop skills like creative thinking, self-confidence, listening, brainstorming, team building, empathy, and communication, all while having loads of laughs. They’re introduced to basic scene structure, the art of storytelling and character development through the study of classic Second City scenes and other written materials.

Mornings usually start off with improvisation before moving into comedy writing and specialty skills (like stand-up comedy or satire-writing or clowning) after lunch. There are also breaks built into the morning and afternoon sessions.

Participants are encouraged to explore the freedom of movement and self-expression while also developing a better understanding of theatricality and onstage performance techniques. Every day includes exciting new activities!

How do I expand this narrative arc?

  • Hire a local company to run an improv workshop at your school;

  • Host a comedy-based talent competition at your school;

  • Line up a mental health expert for a talk at your school.

  • Start an Improv Everywhere club in your community!

  • Do a virtual school year based program through Second City, or check out one of the many other reputable comedy factories that run programs for teens (like The Groundlings).

HOT TIP: Social and emotional welfare are hot topics in schools these days, and laughter can be very healing. Think about ways that you can enlist community members to share your love of this art form. It’s a great way to make a local impact!
