Syracuse Semester Online

Syracuse University runs a series of online accelerated (8-week) courses for credit, and high school students are eligible! This is a great way to experience college learning from the comfort of home, and to explore classes that probably aren’t offered at your high school. For example, Anthrology 185 (Global Encounters) introduces students to ”Predominant views of reality and values in the cultures of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Humanistic study of cultures and nature of cross-cultural understanding.”

Online courses are a terrific way to expand your mind, and a great boost to a unique narrative arc. Other course offerings include Sociology, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, Intro to Public Policy, and Nutrition in Health.

Don’t be fooled - these classes will be challenging. But you’ll get out of them what you put in to them!

How do I expand this narrative arc? Probably the best way to expand on what you’ve learned is to launch into a serious independent study back at your high school. Choose a mentor carefully, and make sure that the project is well-conceived and executed. Then, consider trying to get your research published in one of the many credible journals that carry the work of high school students. For example, check out the Journal of Student Research and the Columbia Journal of Science Research. Ask your mentor - chances are decent that he or she will have some other great ideas.
